More about Miguel, the winner of the 2021 First Generation in College Scholarship

Aug 3, 2021, 15:00 PM by National Flute Association

The winner of this year's First Generation in College Scholarship is Miguel Rodriguez. Miguel is a talented and dedicated flutist who will be attending Northwestern University this fall.

"As I grew up, my parents always told me that hard work pays off. When I decided to focus on music and take my chances at university auditions, I found that their words were true," says Miguel. "Now, with the generosity of the NFA, my college dreams and future aspirations are even more tangible."

NFA member Scott Metlicka is Miguel's teacher and had this to say: "I am ecstatic to hear the news Miguel A. Rodriguez won the NFA’s First Generation Scholarship. Miguel graduated at the top of his high school class and has always maintained academics, music, family, and athletics. I would like to recognize the guidance he received through Chicago Musical Pathways Initiative, a program that fosters intense performance and instruction for university-bound musicians. Miguel has the perseverance to make a living as a professional musician; he continually auditions and applies for many different opportunities but never lets any disappointments change his spirit and determination. Thank you, National Flute Association, for awarding this scholarship to such a deserving student."

Miguel will receive $2,000 to be applied toward tuition, educational fees, or related expenses and will enjoy one-on-one career mentorship sessions with the Career and Artistic Development Committee during the academic year.

We're delighted to support such a promising young artist and look forward to following Miguel's path and future successes.
