Youth Flute Day is a one-day clinic designed for flutists ages 9-18.

An offering of the NFA's 2024 Convention, participants will take part in fun activities and workshops designed especially for their young minds. All young flutists are invited, regardless of ability level!

2024 Schedule

All events take place at the Henry B. González Convention Center (900 East Market Street)

8-9am | Admissions & Warm-up

9-9:50am | Playful Flute with Sasha Graver

10-10:40am | Flute to Fife: An Introduction to the Fife with the United States Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps

Join members of The United States Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps for an introductory class on playing the fife. Participants will learn fingerings, sound, and technique exercises. Additional resource packets will be provided, and fifes will be available for attendees to try.

10:45-11:30am | Rhythmic Gymnastics

Emma Shubin and Cassandra Eisenreich will lead participants through interactive games to improve rhythmic accuracy, understanding of meter and pulse using Dalcroze Eurhythmics.

11:30am-1pm | Lunch & Visit Exhibit Hall

The NFA's legendary Exhibit Hall will feature 60+ flute vendors. Try out instruments, find new sheet music, or buy a fun accessory from your favorite retailers.

1:15-2:30pm | Teaching Themes of Nature

Mary Basset, Meret Bitticks, Zara Lawler & Wendy Stern will work on specific images of nature while developing tone and interpretation in young students.

2:45-4pm | Etude Clinic

Drawing from all three etude selections for the 2024-25 Texas All-State Auditions, we invite Mary Karen Clardy, Lisa Garner Santa and Julee Kim Walker to present a clinic on each etude.

4:10-4:45pm | Flute Choir Rehearsal: You, Me, Us

5pm | Closing Ceremony and Flute Choir Concert

Celebrate the day with a flute choir concert with RGV Flute Choir, San Antonio Youth Flute Choir, and Youth Flute Day participants led by Dulce Rodriguez and Rachel Woolf. Families and friends are welcome!

Registration Details

Cost: $25/person, includes access to the full day of events
NFA membership is not required to attend Youth Flute Day.
Adult non-flutist chaperones may attend free of charge (registration is required).
For groups of 10 or more, registration is only $20 per person. For group registrations, contact Mily Harrod, Membership Manager, at mharrod@nfaonline.org.
Students: Please plan to bring your own folding music stand

Advance online registration (by July 26th) is strongly encouraged. On-site registration will be available, but space is limited.
