2025 Convention to Feature New Works by Chamberlain, Dehnhard

Jan 6, 2025, 21:35 PM by Noah Cline

The National Flute Association Annual Convention is a cornerstone event for flutists worldwide, offering a platform for performances, exchange of ideas, and networking opportunities. This year, we aim to elevate the convention experience by commissioning two original compositions that incorporate large flute ensembles and audience participation. These works will not only highlight the talents of professional flutists but also provide unique performance opportunities for convention attendees who don’t typically perform in the convention programming.

Nicole Chamberlain
Atlanta-based composer and flutist Nicole Chamberlain has been commissioned to create an original work inspired by Martin Luther King Jr.’s Six Principles of Nonviolence. The composition will feature antiphonal interplay between local flute choirs and include audience participation. We hope to create an immersive and dynamic musical experience for all in attendance right from the start of the convention.

"During our Atlanta site visit, we were inspired by the city’s extraordinarily rich history and diverse culture," says Program Chair Mariana Gariazzo. "Atlanta’s legacy as an emblem of peace and nonviolent activism led us to seek a composer who could authentically represent this spirit...Chamberlain emerged as the perfect choice for this project."

Tilmann Dehnhard
Tilmann Dehnhard's work will bring the convention to a memorable closure, encapsulating key concepts of the convention theme of "Unity & Universal Oneness." The composition will feature a large and diverse ensemble of flutists spanning all skill levels—flute enthusiasts, students, and professional players alike—showcasing the richness and inclusivity of the NFA’s membership. Through this commission, we aim to create a unique and inspiring performance opportunity for convention attendees, fostering a sense of unity and community.

Tilmann Dehnhard is an internationally acclaimed performer and educator, known for his workshops on jazz, contemporary music, and improvisation for flute and saxophone. He has composed two award-winning publications recognized by the National Flute Association: The New Flute (2014 NFA Award Winner) and Jazz Studies for Flute (2012 NFA Award Winner), both published by Universal Edition Vienna. Dehnhard's compositions are renowned for their upbeat, jazzy, and idiomatic style, captivating the imagination of flute players worldwide. Despite his global influence, Tilmann has never attended an NFA convention—making his participation this year an exciting first.

The NFA's 53rd Annual Convention will be held from August 7-10, 2025 at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta (GA). All flutists are invited to attend. More information is available at nfaonline.org/convention
