Joseph Mariano

2001 Lifetime Achievement Award

Joseph Mariano completed his musical studies in 1933 with William Kincaid and Marcel Tabuteau at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. He served as principal flute of the National Symphony for its 1934-1935 season, and held the associated positions of Professor at the Eastman School of Music and first flute of the Rochester Philharmonic from 1935 until his retirement in 1974. During this time he established a reputation as one of the great American flutists and teachers of the mid-twentieth century. Today Mariano’s former students permeate the music world with many in leading academic and orchestral positions. Mariano’s legendary playing can be heard once again in the Historic Recording Series Volume Two recently released by, and available through, the National Flute Assocation.
