Next Steps for the Masterclass Performers Competition

Entrants will be notified by Thursday, April 30, 2020 of the judges' decisions. Six flutists chosen to advance will participate in a masterclass during the 2021 NFA Convention in Washington, D.C.

The Masterclass Performers Competition will select college flutists to perform in masterclasses for Alberto Almarza and Shigenori Kudo at the 2020 NFA Convention. This competition is open to any flutist who has been a full-time undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in an accredited college, university, or conservatory during the 2019-2020 academic year.

Competition Requirements*

  • All flutists must be current NFA members at the time the entry is submitted. If chosen to perform or present at the convention, flutists must also be current members at the time of the convention and register for the convention by July 1, 2020. To join or renew, go to nfaonline.org/signup.

  • $55 entry fee (paid during submission process)

All entrants must submit their entry, upload recordings/supplemental materials, and pay competition and membership fees by 11:59 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, Tuesday, February 18, 2020.

Recorded Round Repertoire

Each piece should be uploaded as a separate file in the following order. All uploaded files must be audio recordings. No videos are allowed.

  • Johann Sebastian Bach, Partita in A Minor for flute solo, BWV 1013, I. Allemande (no repeats) (Bärenreiter)
  • Henri Dutilleux: Sonatine for flute and piano, Andante espressivo to the end (Alphonse Leduc)

Accompanied repertoire must be recorded with piano accompaniment.

 

Masterclass Repertoire

Each entrant must include three choices for masterclass repertoire, in order of preference, to perform should they be selected as a winner of the competition. Titles, movements, composer names, composer’s dates, and exact timings must be included with your competition entry. Participants will be bound by their original selections.

Those entering this competition may also may also be eligible to apply for the Frances Blaisdell Scholarship, which provides $1000 toward NFA convention expenses.
