A Practical Guide to San Antonio

Jul 24, 2024, 14:25 PM by Noah Cline

This post was written by the Office & Convention Intern, Darcy Tecalero

The time to head to San Antonio for the 2024 NFA Convention is near! Known as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, San Antonio has the largest concentration of Spanish colonial architecture, including the oldest active cathedral and the Alamo, one of the city’s 5 colonial missions (plus the most visited by tourists!) From historic sites to museums and all the way to Tex-Mex food, San Antonio is a city you don’t want to miss out on exploring while attending the convention!

To help you navigate the city in more detail, including transportation and parking, click here to look into the resources provided by Visit San Antonio.

Average temperatures in San Antonio in August are high, including humidity. With an average high of 97 and the average low being 78, it’s important to keep yourself in check to ensure that the heat doesn’t get to you. If you plan on exploring around outside of the convention, always keep a hat on and wear sunscreen with a high SPF, as it’s always sunny in the city. Whether you’re staying for the convention only or wanting to explore, always carry a water bottle in hand to stay hydrated. I would recommend bringing a reusable water bottle from home - or picking up an exclusive NFA water bottle from our booth in the Exhibit Hall!

Convention Center

Henry B. González Convention Center

Address: 900 E Market St, San Antonio, TX 78205

The Convention Center is about a 15 minute drive from San Antonio International Airport and a 3 minute drive/13 minute walk from the Amtrak station (350 Hoefgen Ave). The Convention Center holds the El Puente Café, which will be open throughout the convention, and feature performances from our Flute Ensemble Festival.

The Convention Center is home to the Lila Cockrell Theatre, where we will present the 2024 Gala Concerto Concert - Gala di Concerti on Saturday, Aug. 3rd. With solo performances by Ransom Wilson, Jennifer Grim, Amal Gochenour, and Lorna McGhee with the San Antonio Philharmonic Orchestra, it’s a concert you don’t want to miss!

Hotels

There are two official convention hotels: the Marriott Riverwalk and the Marriott Rivercenter (note the similar hotel names!). There is a last-minute block of discount rooms available at the Marriott Rivercenter, which you can book through July 29th. There are many hotels in the area, should you want to look for an alternative place to stay.

Local Amenities & Restaurants

If you’re looking to buy grocery items to keep in your hotel room, the nearest place to head to is H-E-B (516 S Flores St.). It’s roughly an 8-10 minute drive from the convention center.

If you’re looking for something closer to the convention center, there’s a CVS Pharmacy (300 E Commerce St.), and the Shops at Rivercenter, a shopping mall on the River Walk (across the street from The Convention Center at the intersection of E Commerce St. & Bowie St.) that includes numerous restaurants.

Stop by San Antonio’s River Walk where you can enjoy food from places such as PROST, Cafe Ole, Casa Rio, Yard House, Boudro’s and more! Click here to check out the large selection of dining options at the River Walk.

Another great spot to visit is the Historic Market Square, the largest Mexican market in the United States! “El Mercado” and the “Farmer’s Market Plaza” has hundreds of local shops with products ranging from local artisans all the way to goods imported from Mexico. The market also hosts a variety of food options from their Food Court to the popular Mi Tierra Cafe and Bakery, a 24-hour spot where you can enjoy a variety of pastries, drinks and Tex-Mex food! Click here to learn more about the Historic Market Square.

The NFA created a page where you can find any information on accessibility in regards to The Convention Center, renting wheelchairs, accessibility at both the Marriott Riverwalk and Marriott Rivercenter, financial and more. If you are in need of information on accessibility, you can click here

The Convention Schedule

The 2024 NFA Convention - Flauta Mundi: Global Voices of the Flute, will take place from August 1st - 4th. Click here for more general information and quick links!

The 2024 Convention Program Book is available to download here. As always, there have been some changes made to convention programming after the publication of the program book, and these changes are listed at the link above.

There is also a possibility that events could change throughout the convention, so in order to keep up with any changes, I would recommend downloading the Guidebook app. Not only can you keep yourself updated on any changes with the app, but you can also pick and choose what scheduled events you’d like to attend, giving you the freedom to create your own unique schedule! The Guidebook app is available to download in the App Store and Google Play.
