Next Steps for the Convention Performers Competition

Entrants will be notified by Thursday, April 30, 2020 of the judges' decisions. Winners will be selected to submit a video recording to be featured by the NFA. Repertoire will be selected by the coordinator from the winners of the Newly Published Music Competition. Upload your video recording here by Monday, August 3, 2020, 11:59 p.m. EDT.

The Convention Performers Competition is open to all professional flutists and flute teachers. Winners will perform at the 2020 NFA Convention on a program devoted to music that has been published within the past year and pre-selected from winners of the Newly Published Music Competition. The NFA will provide a pianist for the convention performance, although winners may bring a pianist at their own expense. Entrants are eligible to win this competition a maximum of two times. 

All entrants must be 22 years of age or older by the first day of the convention (born on or before August 10, 1998). Entrants will be required to show proof of age at the convention.

Competition Requirements*

  • All flutists must be current NFA members at the time the entry is submitted. If chosen to perform or present at the convention, flutists must also be current members at the time of the convention and register for the convention by July 1, 2020. To join or renew, go to nfaonline.org/signup
  • Completed entry
  • Uploaded files
  • $55 entry fee (paid during submission process)

All entrants must submit their entry, upload recordings/supplemental materials, and pay competition and membership fees by 11:59 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, Tuesday, February 18, 2020.

Recorded Round Repertoire

Each piece should be uploaded as a separate file in the following order. All uploaded files must be audio recordings. No videos are allowed.

  • Sarah Bassingthwaighte, House of Doors Concerto for Flute, Con Fuoco (ALRY Publications)
  • Georg Philipp Telemann, Sonata für Flöte und Basso Continuo, Tafelmusik 1, 5 (TWV 41:h4), Dolce (Wiener Urtext Edition) 

Accompanied repertoire must be recorded with piano accompaniment.

* Competitions are subject to all rules and regulations on this page as well as the 2020 General Competition Information and Rules and Regulations. Incomplete entries will be subject to disqualification.
