Addenda

Any changes made to convention programming after the publication of the 2023 program book will be listed below.

Thursday

9:45 a.m. — High School Soloist Competition Final Round — Lia Suk, first alternate, will compete in place of finalist, Riona Kim.

10:30 a.m. — Dance Rhythm Found in Valerie Coleman’s Works — 

  • Valerie Coleman's Wish will now be played instead of Danza de la Mariposa.
  • Valerie Coleman's Afro-Cuban Concerto for Wind Quintet has been added to the program. Players include Samantha Donnell, flute; Jacqueline Palmer, oboe; Heather van Beek, clarinet; Michelle Fletcher, bassoon; Bailye Hendley, horn
  • Coleman's Umoja for Flute Quartet will now be performed by Samantha Donnell, Karen Large, Elizabeth Robinson, and Brittany Trotter. 
  • The program order is now: Afro-Cuban Concerto for Wind Quintet - Wish - Umoja

11:45 a.m. — Exploring Graphic Scores — Robert Cart will no longer be performing.

12:15 p.m. — Historical Development of the Flute — Program added. Magda Schwerzmann (flute) and Tigran Buniatyan, (harpsichord) will perform:

  • Suite No. 5, Op.35 in B Minor by Joseph Bodin de Boismortier (1689-1755). Movements: Prélude, Bourrée en Rondeau, Fantaisie, Gigue.
  • Sonata No. 10 in E Minor (Hallenser Sonata No.2) by George Frideric Handel (1685-1759). Movements: 3. Grave, 4. Minuet.

1:00 p.m. — Her Voice: Music and Poetry by Women ~ New Classics ~ Janus Project Part I — This event is cancelled.

1:45 p.m. — Chamber Music Beyond Borders — The title of the commissioned work by Amanda Harberg has changed from Moon Flowers to Firefly Triptych (mvt 1. Journey Into Night, mvt 2. Invocation, mvt 3. Midnight Jam).

1:45 p.m. — Self Sufficient Flutist — Bring your flute to participate!

3:00 p.m. — Pedagogy Committee Booth Session — This event is cancelled.

4:30 p.m.  — High School Masterclass with Orlando "Maraca" Valle  — Nancy Stagnitta will be replacing Orlando Maraca Valle as the clinician for this masterclass.

5:45 p.m. — Remembering George Crumb — This event is cancelled.

6:00 p.m. — Exhibitors' Concert —

  • Performers for Wm. S. Haynes include Dr. Korinne Smith, flute; Blair Mothersbaugh, alto flute; Colette Valentine, piano
  • Performers for Verne Q. Powell Flutes include Kristyn Moore, Daniel Sharp, and Julia Viviano, flutes
  • Flute Specialists Inc.: Peyton Krolewski will be replaced by Berta Teodora, alto flute

8:00 p.m. — Thursday Night Opening Gala —

  • Sheila del Bosque is replacing Holly Haufman.
  • Catalina Ortega is replacing Carlos Cano in the Coro Latino ensemble.
  • Carlos Cano and his pianist Hernán Milla will no longer be performing.
  • Orlando "Maraca" Valle will no longer be performing. Eric Chacon will be performing in his place.

10:30 p.m. — Thursday Late-Night Cabaret: Jazz & Latin All Stars —

  • Carlos Cano and Hernan Milla are no longer performing.
  • Orlando "Maraca" Valle will be replaced by Nancy Stagnitta on this program.

 

Friday

10:00 a.m. — Baroque Masterclass with Kathie Stewart — Joanna Marsden will replace Kathie Stewart as the masterclass clinician.

10:00 a.m. — Around and Beyond This World —

  • Andra Bohnet will replace Mili Change on this program.
  • Salty by Nicole Chamberlain (b. 1977) has been added to the beginning of this program.

10:30 a.m. — The Rubicon Crossed: Robert Dick's Biggest Hits — Afterlight will replace Fish Are Jumping on this program.

10:45 a.m. — Flute ~ Electronics ~ Multi-Media — NoaNoa by Kaija Saariaho (b. 1952) has been added to the beginning of the program. It will be performed by Eva Amsler (flute and electronics).

12:00 p.m. — Accessibility Flutists and Allies Affinity Group — The event title has changed to "Adaptive Flutists and Allies Affinity Group".

12:30 p.m. — Flute Ensemble Festival Concert — Spelling/Title correction: Chanté Wašté Hokšila (My Kind-Hearted Boy) Traditional Lakota Lullaby arr. William Linthicum-Blackhorse

12:30 p.m. — Four Corners of the American Mountain West ~ Voices of the Native American West — William Linthicum-Blackhorse will no longer be performing. 

12:45 p.m. — Contemporary Stories: The Laurel’s Heartbeat—Sonic Stories—Vonnegut Suite—Hoover and Coleman — Bridget Pasker will play cello on Tasting the Night by Gretchen Yanover.

1:00 p.m. — Performance Day Peace of Mind — Cobus du Toit and Wissam Boustany will replace Ayres Potthof on the panel.

2:30 p.m. — Kinko Ryū Shakuhachi: From the East to the West ~ The Path of Tradition — This event is cancelled. 

3:00 p.m. — Exploring Birdsong and Japanese Shakuhachi Influence in Elizabeth Brown’s ‘Trillium’ — Nicole will perform on flute, not shakuhachi.

3:00 p.m. — NFA Committee Chairs & Appointees Meeting — TIME CHANGE! This event will be from 4pm - 5pm

4:30 p.m. — Cadenzas, Eingänge, and More: Improvisation in the Classical Era — This event is cancelled.

5:15 p.m. — Melodies of America: Eric Chacon in Concert — Brian Ward will play bass on this concert. 

5:30 p.m. — Inspiration from Outside of the Lines – Elicio Winds — This event is cancelled.

8:30 a.m. — Avian Innovation — Rachel Woolf will be replacing Mary Matthews on the program.

9:30 a.m. — Los Flautistas Latinos — Carlos Cano will no longer be performing.

12:00 p.m. — Performance Health Care Committee Movement Session — This event is cancelled.

12:30 p.m. — The Four Corners of the American Mountain West ~ Voices of the Native American West — William Clay's piece is not titled Dark Fauna

1:15 p.m. — Masterclass Performers with Carlos Cano — Giovanni Pérez will replace Carlos Cano as the masterclass clinician. Andria Fennig will replace Hernan Milla as the masterclass pianist.

2:15 p.m. — The Dream Deferred Project ~ Synergy in Concert — Altitude by Alexina Louie will no longer be performed.

2:15 p.m. — Flute Ensemble Festival Concert — Updated performer roster for the University of Oregon Duck Flute Choir

9:15 a.m. — Visit the Musical Instrument Museum! An Introduction to the MIM by Eddie Chia-Hao Hsu — The museum name was misspelled in the Program Book. It is the Musical Instrument Museum not the Music Instrument Museum.

12:00 p.m. — Keith Underwood Tribute Concert —

  • Julie McKinsey and Joel Tse will no longer be performing
  • Adam Sadberry will be performing Sonata in A Major by César Franck (1822-1890) instead of the piece by Fred Onovwerosuoke.
  • John McMurtery will be replacing Gretchen Pusch on this program
  • Hadar Noiberg will no longer be performing

1:15 p.m. — Wissam Boustany—Masterclass — Xander Day will perform for Wissam Boustany.

1:30 p.m. — Celebrating Diversity: Presenting a graded guide of flute music by LGBT Composers—Hypermobility, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, and Flute Playing — Gabriela Alvarado is no longer presenting. 

2:00 p.m. — What IF... Call for Scores Recital — The student performing the first piece is Kali Kaiser.

2:15 p.m. — World Music Concert — Andria Fennig is replacing Windell Little.

3:00 p.m. — Highlights of Judith Shatin’s Flute Music — ROOM CHANGE: 129 A
