Proposed Guidelines For the Myrna Brown International Scholarship

Myrna Brown International Scholarship

Mission
The mission of the Myrna Brown International Scholarship is as follows:
  • to honor Myrna Brown for her dedication and devotion to the National Flute Association;
  • to award one scholarship every other year, beginning in 2008, by
    providing partial financial assistance to a flutist from an economically challenged country to attend the NFA Convention, and in addition,
    to waive membership dues in the NFA and convention fees for one year;
  • to provide an opportunity for the scholarship flutist to perform, participate in a panel discussion or adjudicate at an NFA Convention;
  • to provide an opportunity for the scholarship flutist to write an article for the Flutist Quarterly relating his/her experiences at the NFA Convention and how the experience impacted his/her musical life.
  • to spread the word about the NFA to the flutists of the world, one by one, by asking the scholarship flutist to share with his/her country's flute community information regarding  the activities and services of the NFA.

Application Deadline
Application deadline is November 1st of the year before the convention at which the winner will perform.  (November 1, 2007 for the 2008 convention). 

Application Requirements
Application requirements are as follows:

  1. Brief written proposal (translated into English) stating why attending the convention is desired and the proposed presentation either lecture, performance or as a competition judge.
  2. Recording of proposed repertoire to be performed or another example of applicants playing.
  3. Statement of need and for the potential for impact upon returning to native country
  4. Resume’ or bio
  5. Send two copies of the above to:

Evaluation criteria and process
Evaluation criteria to be used:
  1. Potential for impact in native country
  2. Ability to present in lecture or performance format at the NFA     convention or to serve as a competition judge.
  3. The recipient must be an underprivileged flutist of an economically challenged country.

The Myrna Brown International Liaison and the Myrna Brown Society Chair will appoint a committee who will choose a suitable recipient. The Program Chair will decide how best to utilize the awardee's skills at the convention in consultation with the awardee and the MB committee. The winner will receive an official invitation in the form of a co-signed letter from the Myrna Brown Scholarship Committee chair and the Program Chair. A copy will be forwarded to the President and to the Executive Director.  The scholarship check will be paid at the convention to the recipient.

Scholarship Timeframe
The Myrna Brown International Guest Scholarship is on a two - year scholarship cycle starting 2006 and will be awarded in even years.  The maximum amount of the scholarship will be $1500 and due to its status as a scholarship, is non-taxable to the recipient.  Additionally, the scholarship recipient is provided a complimentary convention pass and a membership for one year to the NFA.

Funding of Scholarship
The Myrna Brown International Guest Scholarship is funded solely by the Myrna Brown Memorial Fund and is not eligible for independent fundraising outside of the NFA executive office channels, such as the annual President’s Appeal.
