Flute Choir Reading Session

by Phyllis Avidan Louke

Christina Steffen directed the Saturday morning Flute Choir Reading Session, featuring a very large group of flutists, including about 10 contras, playing new and very new published works including Alexandra Molnar-Suhajda’s gorgeous “The Moonbright Sea,” Vincenzo Palermo’s “Caccia frenetica,” which features a quartet of soloists, Michael Turner’s “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen,” “Song from a Secret Garden” by Rolf Lovland and arranged by Judy Nishimura, and Jonathan Cohen’s “Land of Arctic Fire.”

I enjoyed James-Michael Sellers’ “Petrichor” and Matt Johnston’s gorgeous arrangement of Elgar’s “Nimrod” from Enigma Variations. Unfortunately, there was not enough time to read through several pieces on the program: “Spirit of the Wind” by Molnar-Suhajda, “Locomotion” by Peter Senchuk, and “La Bruja Llorona” by Ruben Flores.
